IBHE-SAC Illinois Board of Higher Education - Student Advisory CommitteeRepresentative Report on President Gloria Gibson's 7/17/2018 Open Office Meeting
1. Dr. Gibson discussed insight from the State Universities Annuitants Association (SUAA) meeting about fair pensions.
2. Dr. Gibson discussed her plan to include the NEIU community toward better NEIU access, recruitment, and retention by harnessing Forward 150 recommendations, the Fall (Presidential) Transition Committee report, and from NEIU’s Strategic Plan. The Fall Transition Committee, Dr. Gibson assured me at the last Open Office hour on June 28th, will include students. The committee will decide on 10 issues that provide a broad view of NEIU, prioritize those issues, and provide recommendations. Dr. Gibson envisions gauging NEIU’s future with the campus community from Forward 150 recommendations, the Transition Committee, and the Strategic Plan and inputting this future into her budget for NEIU.
3. Dr. Gibson stressed that faculty are the best advocates for and the best recruiters for new students and need to be accessed to help dispel NEIU’s unfavorable image among high school counselors. Dr. Gibson revealed that high school counselors must account for their students’ remaining in college for a year and a half after high school graduation. Unless NEIU improves retention, high school counselors will urge students to enroll elsewhere. Dr. Gibson thanked Dr. Francisco Gaytan, NEIU Provost's Fellow for Success and Retention, for this and other retention initiatives.
4. A student employee reported that some of the Northeastern Illinois University Honors Program (UHP) links and links to the graduate social work program fail to connect. Dr. Gibson promised to immediately address this technology or maintenance issue.
5. Dr. Gibson committed to addressing departmental customer service with better training.
6. Student Ylonda expressed her gratitude to NEIU for helping steer her on the right path. Dr. Gibson and other alumni agreed that stories like these help promote NEIU locally, nationally, and globally.
7. Obama Energy Corporation and an alumnus presented briefly and will discuss with Dr. Gibson a plan to improve retention.
8. Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce President Bill Morton briefly described the Chamber’s extensive NEIU internship program and our other work with NEIU.
9. I described my work with the Chamber in developing with Network 49, endorsement questions for the Illinois gubernatorial candidates, specifically the candidate’s plan to resolve the Illinois pension crisis without infringing upon pensioners’ rights. I mentioned the relevancy of my recent WZRD Chicago 88.3 FM interview with former Alderman of the 2nd Ward Bob Fioretti in which he described the importance of term limits and campaign contribution limits for qualified candidates to have a chance of running for and winning political office.

11. Reports about pending Illinois legislation.
a. HB 5020: Bipartisan bill to to prioritize new, 4-year MAP grants, not yet signed by the governor.
b. SB 2969: Helps make college more affordable for students willing to remain in state.
c. SJR 76: Removes the necessity of retaking and paying for core General Education courses when transferring between institutions.

Rogers Park Chamber Volunteers at NEIU Career Fair and University Honors Program

The Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce spent a busy day last Thursday, November 16, 2017, at Northeastern Illinois University NEIU. 

The Chamber participated in the College of Business and Management Career Fair. Chamber President Bill Morton and interns, Emilia Jamarillo and Trudy Leong, greeted and discussed Chamber internship business, social media, and legal opportunities with many of the 1,000 students majoring in Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Management and Business Administration. 

After the Career Fair, Biil Morton and Trudy volunteered with the University Honors Program at the North Park Village Senior Apartments at 5801 N. Pulaski Rd. to help at the Apartments' annual Thanksgiving dinner for the residents. 

UHP Director Dr. Jon Hageman sent out a last-minute call to UHP students for help and eloquently stated the need.

"Many of the residents are alone and have no family in the area (or at all)--the holidays are times when those residents are particularly alone, and even something small like a meal served by a smiling face lets them know they matter—it gives them a sense of worth and human dignity that is otherwise lacking, or in very short supply.

For me, it’s easy to see work and other things as overwhelming. Taking a couple of hours to serve others whose lives are in many ways much more difficult than mine helps me keep things in perspective. I have seen how a small amount of time on my part can make a big difference in the life of someone who otherwise feels abandoned. Ultimately, we all depend on help from others, and it’s important to repay that in some way."

Chamber President Bill Morton appreciates giving back and providing interns with a well-rounded internship experience, which includes Chamber volunteer work. 

Mr. Morton looks forward to Chamber involvement in future university career fairs and supporting his interns' volunteer opportunities. Trudy is an NEIU student and enrolled in the University Honors Program.
